Outlook Anywhere: Fast vs. Slow network connection over HTTP or TCP/IP

Outlook Anywhere allows you to connect to Exchange even from outside of the corporate network via so-called "Microsoft Exchange Proxy Settings". Here you'll find options for slow and fast network connections but what does Outlook consider fast or slow and when does it actually matter? This guide takes a closer look at these questions and shows you how to control it.

Outlook and the Internet Explorer security leak

The Internet Explorer security leak, for which a patch is now available, could also affect your Outlook security. This is only the case when you are working with Outlook 2003 and previous and have your Internet Security Zone for Outlook set to the Internet Zone. Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 Beta are not affected.

Currently there are no known exploits of this security leak that work via Outlook 2003 or previous. However, in order to protect yourself, make sure you have your Security Zone for Outlook 2003 or previous set to “Restricted sites”. This zone is also the secure default and the recommended setting. You can verify this setting by going to;
Tools-> Options…-> tab Security

This exploit could also surface via other parts of Windows (such as via Gadgets, Outlook Express, Windows (Live) Mail and the Help system) since they all rely on Internet Explorer components. So even when you are not using Internet Explorer as your Internet browser, it is still highly recommended to install this update as soon as possible.

You can get this update via Windows Update as well.

Open message in Internet browser

Outlook uses Word as the HTML rendering engine which could end up in a malformed display of the email message. Use a simple script to render the message in an Internet browser of your choice by a click of a button.

Outlook hangs caused by recent PayPal messages

A recent change in the PayPal notification messages can cause Outlook to hang for a couple of minutes. The issue is caused by an invalid picture reference in the message and the way Outlook deals with time-outs. A quick fix would be to disable the Reading Pane and delete the message. If you need to keep the message, you can easily fix it by deleting the offending image from the message itself or by editing your HOSTS file.

Allow or prevent Automatic Forwarding/Replying to the Internet

In an Exchange environment you might encounter that your automatic forward/reply rules and Automatic Replies (Out of Office) aren't working. They probably are working but are forwarded/replying to a message from the Internet. This is disabled as a secure default at Exchange level. This article explains how Exchange Administrators can change this behavior via the Exchange Admin Center (ECP), Exchange Management Console (EMC) or Exchange PowerShell commands (EMS).
