It could happen real easy; a wrong Move To Folder… command or a misplaced Drag & Drop and suddenly the items end up in the Outlook Today folder. When you select this folder, the Outlook Today page will show up.
So how can you still retrieve these messages you wonder?
Disable Home Page option
Actually the Outlook Today folder is a mail folder just like the Inbox folder. The only different thing is that this folder has a Home Page; Outlook Today. You can disable this Home Page so you can use the folder as a normal mail folder and gain access to your messages.
In later versions of Outlook, the top level folder of the default mailbox is no longer called “Outlook Today” but still holds the Outlook Today page and can be disabled via the same instructions as indicated below.
In Outlook 2007, the folder is called “Personal Folders” for POP3 and IMAP accounts or “Mailbox – Your name” when using an Exchange account. In Outlook 2010, the folder is called “Outlook Data File” or named after your email address. It also no longer holds the typical Outlook Today icon.
- Right click on the folder holding Outlook Today and choose Properties.
- Click on the tab Home Page.
- Deselect the option: Show home page by default for this folder
- Click on OK.
When you now click on the Outlook Today folder, you’ll see your mail items.
Disable home page option to show Outlook Today as a normal folder.
Enable the option again to display Outlook Today again. If the Address field is left empty press the “Restore Default…” button to fill in the address again.
